St. Stephen’s Episcopal School

Rogers-O’Brien’s partnership with St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin spans two decades and six projects across campus. From academics and athletics to housing and dining, RO’s work touches nearly every facet of student life.

Arthur Temple Jr. Upper School Academic Center
The 21,400 SF Academic Center pairs a two-story classroom building with a single-story student center, both clad in Austin stone to settle naturally into the surrounding landscape. Each classroom opens directly to an outdoor corridor with its own dedicated HVAC, giving students a strong connection to the campus environment. Energy-efficient lighting, dedicated cooling zones, and a high-performance envelope were designed and built to LEED Silver standards. The project also earned the AGC Outstanding Construction Award and the ABC Excellence in Construction Eagle Award.

Gunn Hall Middle School
RO renovated and expanded the 17,500 SF Gunn Hall Middle School, adding an art room, three grade-level common areas, state-of-the-art science labs, wider stairwells, additional restrooms, a conference room, and new tutoring spaces. The work eliminated the campus’s portable classrooms entirely. A phased construction approach kept the building occupied and classes running throughout, and RO incorporated stone salvaged from around campus into the new exterior walls to preserve the building’s weathered character. The project earned a three-star City of Austin Green Build certification.

Aquatic Center
The 27,000 SF Aquatic Center centers on an Olympic-sized Myrtha pool housed within a naturally ventilated pre-engineered metal building, creating a comfortable environment for swimmers and spectators alike. A conditioned portion of the facility holds office spaces, locker rooms, and public restrooms, while the mechanical and pool equipment rooms are heated and exhausted to keep operations efficient. Seating accommodates up to 300 spectators for meets and events.

Additional Campus Projects
RO has also delivered a gym addition, a dining hall and student center, and new dormitory and faculty residences. Each project reflects a deep understanding of the campus’s design language, phasing demands, and commitment to the student experience.

Two decades in, St. Stephen’s continues to trust RO with the spaces where students learn, live, compete, and gather.
