Measure Twice, Cut Once: Quality Control at Briargate Elementary School

THE QUALITY CONTROL PLAY THAT KEPT CONSTRUCTION MOVING

When you walk onto the Briargate Elementary School job site, you can feel the weight of the project. As the largest project to date for RO’s Houston office, the stakes are high, and the margin for error is razor-thin. It’s a place where every detail matters, where precision and timing are the difference between a seamless operation and costly setbacks. That’s where Project Engineer Antonio Casillas stepped in to turn RO’s quality protocols into a blueprint for success.

A PROACTIVE APPROACH

Central to Briargate’s success is RO’s 3-phase inspection process, designed to eliminate rework by addressing potential issues before they snowball. Antonio put this process to use, coordinating with trade partners to plan inspections and documenting every step with care. His efforts became a proactive shield against the chaos rework can bring.

When dealing with consultants and design partners, Superintendent Bryan Zwerneman witnessed firsthand how Antonio’s diligence paid off:

“Shout-out to Antonio for his 3-phase documentation! His photos from pier cage inspections proved that we used the correct reinforcement and showed the technician had used the wrong data. Great job being proactive!”

When another inspection reported incorrectly documented pier sizes, Antonio’s meticulous photo records saved the day. “Terracon even sent out a more experienced technician after seeing his work. Way to go, man.” Antonio’s quick thinking and attention to detail propelled the project forward. Thanks to his efforts, the team was able to continue installing piers without delay, ultimately completing this critical activity ahead of schedule. Beyond the schedule, the impact of avoiding rework rippled across the project; the team conserved resources, stayed ahead of schedule, and maintained the project’s momentum. The use of Propeller software for precision checks and weekly alignment meetings ensured milestones were met without delay.

QUALITY FROM THE SKIES

Quality is standard on the Briargate project, thanks to the dedication of the team. Tools like Propeller, a cutting-edge aerial mapping and drone surveying software, also play a key role. Implemented alongside RO’s 3-phase checklist, Propeller enabled the team to perform accurate elevation checks and meticulously verify key milestones, ensuring nothing was overlooked. Weekly meetings kept the team aligned and projects moving forward. These sessions focused on real-time updates, sequencing tasks to avoid delays, and confirming key delivery dates. Any task with less than 10 days of float was flagged as a risk, prompting a plan for acceleration or recovery if needed. By staying proactive, the team ensured schedules stayed on track.

For setbacks beyond the team’s control, a separate work breakdown structure was implemented to monitor and manage disruptions. This rigorous, tech-supported approach kept the schedule on track while maintaining the project’s high-quality standards and streamlined delivery.
