Carrying the Torch: Denny Dinsmore and the Legacy of Pat O’Brien

When Pat O’Brien co-founded Rogers-O’Brien Construction (RO) in 1969, he built the company around a simple standard: demand excellence, take care of your people, and treat everyone like family. More than 50 years later, that standard still drives us, thanks to people like Denny Dinsmore.

Field Director Denny Dinsmore received RO’s Pat O’Brien Legacy Award, an honor reserved for the rare RO employee who embodies everything Pat stood for. It recognizes someone who lives out our core values while demanding excellence and genuinely looking out for the people around them.

Pat taught Denny everything he knows: from the finer details of the craft, to the ambitious vision he held for RO. Over his nearly 40-year tenure, Denny has lived out Pat’s legacy. It’s clear in the passion and care he brings to work every single day.

Nearly four decades of showing up

Ask anyone who’s worked a “Denny job” and you’ll hear a version of the same story. When you work with Denny, you learn a ton about construction, even more about life and teamwork, and you almost certainly walk away with a nickname that sticks for the rest of your career.

That investment in people shows up everywhere. Austin’s VP of Operations Joseph Harper still remembers a project that started back in 2014: “Ever since we started at University House, I’ve been so proud to say I’ve been a mentee of yours. And I still learn from you every day…the amount of mentoring and upbringing you’ve had on so many people in this company is truly remarkable.”

“You have so much empathy for people,” says VP of Safety Ross Daly. “The biggest compliment I can give you is that you lead with your heart.”

You can hear him coming

Spend a day around Denny and you learn something else: he makes people feel at home. “You definitely know when you’re close to Denny, because you can hear him down the hall,” Senior Superintendent Jonathan Pugh laughs. “It makes you feel like you’re welcome; welcome in the company, welcome just in his presence.”

Then there are the nicknames. “He’s the only person who can give everyone at work a nickname and make it stick,” says Superintendent Blake Macha. No pun intended — Denny has exclusively called Blake “Stick” for a decade.

And every so often, Denny reminds everyone he’s a force of nature. Project Director Paul Muenchinger still tells the story from the South Lamar project, when Denny chased a would-be carjacker out of a 7-Eleven parking lot and onto the jobsite, then held the guy down until police arrived. “I didn’t think it was true,” Paul admits. “But the next day, the two arresting officers showed up to thank him and give him a medal.” That’s something you’d only see on a Denny job.

The legacy continues

Pat O’Brien built a company on caring deeply, demanding excellence, and lifting others up. “He’s been a lighthouse for me,” Client Director Christine Sheng says of Denny. “He represents what’s so good about the generation that founded this culture that we get to be part of.”

That’s the whole point. After years of growing under Pat’s mentorship, Denny’s spent decades passing the torch down to the next generation of RO builders: one project, one mentee, and one nickname at a time.

“You have changed the lives of so many people at Rogers-O’Brien,” says fellow Field Director Trey Stewart. “Thank you for everything you have done to make us better.”
